Jagersfontein | Preventable measures might have averted disaster

Friday, September 11th marks four years since the tailings dam wall at the Jagersfontein Diamond mine collapsed.

A professor of Development Studies at the University of the Free State says the disaster demonstrated not only technical failures but also long-term governance problems.

Prof Lochner Marais argues that the Jagersfontein disaster was due to a lack of disaster management at the local government level.

The university has developed a new policy brief, which draws on a four-year collaborative project with the University of Queensland, highlighting important lessons in mining, governance, disaster preparedness, and community recovery.
