So here’s the truth, there are essentially two competing imperial power blocs on one side, the UK and France, along with their European allies, and on the other, the US and Israel.

The US has exercised imperial and neocolonial influence over much of the Middle East and parts of Asia, while the UK and France have maintained spheres of influence in Africa and, more recently, sought to preserve their influence and control over Ukraine.

The reason the UK has increasingly opposed aspects of US-Israeli imperial control over Palestine is not necessarily because of concern for Palestinian lives or opposition to genocide. Rather, it is because of competing strategic interests. The US has become heavily involved in negotiations with Russia while, from the UK and France’s perspective, failing to provide sufficient military support for their objectives in Ukraine. In this sense, the struggle over Ukraine is also a struggle over which powers will maintain political, military, and economic influence over the territory.

At the same time, the US remains deeply involved in the Middle East because of the growing confrontation with Iran, which threatens the regional power structure and influence that the US has worked to maintain.

In a nutshell, the UK and the US are not fundamentally different when viewed through the lens of imperialism and neocolonialism. Both pursue geopolitical interests designed to protect and expand their spheres of influence. Their disagreements are therefore less about opposing genocide, land grabbing, occupation, or exploitation in principle and more about competing strategic priorities.

The UK is essentially applying pressure to the US by removing its support for American objectives in the Middle East including the confrontation with Iran and the due to a lack of American support for British and European objectives in Ukraine. The underlying message is effectively: if you do not support our strategic goals in Ukraine, we have less reason to support your strategic objectives in the middle east
