Burundian migrants in Kenya fear eviction as documentation deadline nears

Thousands of Burundian migrants have gathered outside their embassy in Nairobi as a Kenyan government deadline for documenting foreign workers approaches.

Many say they fear for their safety and livelihoods following growing hostility towards foreigners, after comments by Kenyan President William Ruto about foreign workers taking local jobs.

Pregnant construction worker Alison Nduwimana describes being forced from her home and unable to afford the journey back to Burundi.

Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has clarified that there is no blanket ban on foreign workers. The government has instead provided a 90-day grace period for migrants to obtain the required documentation, while stressing existing regional agreements.
