Latvia remains one of the countries most exposed to security challenges on NATO's eastern flank. From Russia's war against Ukraine and growing drone threats to pressure on the EU's external borders, Riga is facing a rapidly changing security environment. On World Talks, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže discusses defense spending, NATO cooperation, and the growing importance of the transatlantic relationship.
“We have to be very, very fast in creating systems that protect,” the minister says, referring to the evolution of drone warfare and the lessons learned from Ukraine. The minister also argues that countries on the EU's eastern border shoulder a disproportionate burden when it comes to sanctions enforcement, border security, and migration pressure orchestrated through Belarus. Latvia, she says, is effectively protecting the external border of the entire European Union.
Join Marcin Zaborowski and his guest as they discuss Latvia's security priorities and why border states believe they deserve greater support from the European Union.
