Public service ‘must never be motivated by financial profit’: Tan See Leng

TSL just contradicted LW by saying that public service must never be motivated by financial profit. Then why the need to increase salaries? Many of our public servants mentioned that they came from "humble beginnings", yet they seem to have forgotten this when they came into politics. If you feel that you have "sacrificed" financial profit by joining the public sector, then please do NOT do so. If you have decided to join the public sector and serve the country, then stop moaning and get the job done otherwise you can always choose to leave

You mean some think that people choose to step away from private sector because of the $ decision? Meaning to say they expect to be minister and earn millions?

Sure, $20k a month with no annual bonus for ministers, that should be a good salary for public service leadership position, if $20k a month is not enough for you not to worry about inflation, you should not be doing public service.

I am not rebutting the rhetoric that high pay is to attract talent but this stale saying has been used for 30 years, yet how many were attracted other than Tan See Leng? Are we going to attract one person by increasing 20 people’s pay when this one person was not considering pay as a big factor. 90% of them are grown within the system, not the type they claim they want to attract. So since this reason does not work, are they using this reason to enrich themselves so they will find themselves on par with rich people in the country. They have an army of civil servants to do the research, ideas, etc. But benchmark again business men who need to start from very little with risk of bankruptcy? The ministar have never proven that they can earn this type of salary in the private sector. They are praising their own performance but do not know the problems we face and they do not have to face competition with foreign talents. Suggest they go to the private sector (not GLC) for 5 years to build up their experience in the real world then come back if they want to serve. We will gladly pay the salary.<br>The only way to attract talent is probably for the government to be more open to cater to different ideas so that good people will have no qualms of going into politics, whether with PAP or opposition.

Great speech, then why the need to raise ministerial pay scale since salary is never the key motivation to become public office holders?<br><br>It has to be a calling to serve, not financial benefits.

They give themselves big raise where it does not make much of a difference to their lives as to survival.For those who earn much less, the increments are much lower and every dollar makes a difference.Its a bit ridiculous seeing all this.And they cant even help alleviate the cost of living in Singapore properly.Yet rewarding and shielding themselves.

Your speech contradit your high salary and i think u should incharge of moh and try to engulf all those issues thr your experience
