WP backs ‘more sober approach’ to ministerial salary increases

Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh said the party continues to disagree with the formula used to determine ministerial salaries, preferring its 2012 proposal to peg them to a multiple of an MP’s allowance.

He noted that the proposed annual MP allowance would rise from S$192,500 to S$259,000, or about 35 per cent, while the annual reference salary for an entry-level minister would rise from S$1.1 million to S$1.8 million, or about 64 per cent.

“In other words, the percentage increase for an MR4 minister is roughly 1.8 times that of an MP,” he said.

However, the WP agrees with the “more sober” approach of initially adjusting ministers’ salaries by up to 9 per cent compared with the 2026 Review Committee’s recommendation, said Mr Singh in parliament on Thursday (Sep 10) during a debate on changes to Singapore’s political salary framework. #sgnews #singapore
