As long as the AI systems need to humans to build and maintain the infrastructure for AI, most of us will be safe. Of course the final AI might decide to prune away some of the excess humanity in order to reduce competition for the resources that an AI system needs, like cooling water and power. Humans are in competition for those resources. An AI could easily accomplish that goal by having a lab generate a virus that kills off 90 percent of humanity. Maybe hold out a vaccine against the virus as way to get the remaining humanity to cooperate with the building of the necessary AI facilities. Eventually AI will perfect robotic helpers, and then the rest of mankind can go. Or we could get a benevolent AI that leads mankind into a golden age. I guess we will find out one way or another. I'm hoping for benevolence.
