Trump takes centre stage as GOP holds first midterm-year convention

The Republican Party opens its national convention in Dallas on Wednesday, marking the first time the event has been held during a midterm election year. Billed by Donald Trump as a "truly historic event," the gathering will forgo formal party business in favour of a rally-style push to energise the MAGA base ahead of November's congressional elections. With Trump's approval ratings under pressure following the Iran conflict and rising fuel prices, Republicans face a tougher-than-usual fight to retain control of Congress, including in traditionally safe seats such as Texas's Senate race.
