Don't mistake progress for success on ending violence, minister warns Australia | ABC NEWS

Tanya Plibersek has tabled the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commission's annual assessment of how Australia's going in ending violence against women and children.

The minister for social services says while Australia should be proud of the progress it's made, it can't mistake progress for success.

She says Australia has to shift from just responding to violence to dealing with the conditions that cause and exacerbate it.

The minister also told parliament that it means getting support to families before they reach crisis, and delivering on frontline services people depend on.

"If we want violence to become rare, brief and non-recurring as the commissioner states, we must ensure that all areas of government at all levels — social security, education, health, justice — are speaking to each other and pulling in the same direction," Ms Plibersek says.

"Crucially, we must confront the attitudes and behaviours across our communities that still minimise, excuse or allow violence to remain hidden in plain sight."
