Poland’s defense industry is operating on a scale unimaginable just a few years ago, buoyed by record procurement contracts and tens of billions of euros in European funding from the SAFE initiative. But can Polish arms manufacturers meet the country’s growing military needs while also competing for a share of the lucrative global defense market?
“Poland has taken the biggest chunk of [SAFE funding]. €44.3 billion would be invested in Polish economy, in the Polish industry,” Jan Grabowski, Board Vice-President of the Polish Armaments Group, PGZ, told TVP World on the sidelines of the 34th International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce, Poland.
He noted that major contracts for the Borsuk infantry fighting vehicle, Krab self-propelled howitzer, and Rak mortar system have already filled existing production lines.
Yet Grabowski argued that export ambitions remain a key part of the industry’s future. While current production is focused on fulfilling domestic orders, Polish manufacturers are already preparing export-oriented projects and pursuing international partnerships.
“We know that on export markets we don’t have to be alone. We should not be alone. We should have our international partners,” he said, pointing to cooperation with Slovakia and the United Kingdom. “We are showing the prototype of a Polish vehicle also for the export markets, because [there], we can compete with our heavy infantry fighting vehicles, with our partners-slash-competitors like the Brits or the Germans.”
Join TVP World’s Defense Correspondent Zuzanna Jurek and her guest as they explore how European SAFE funding is reshaping the continent’s defense-industrial landscape, what role international partnerships play in helping Polish manufacturers expand into export markets, and how cooperation with Sweden and the United Kingdom could open new opportunities for Poland’s growing naval and missile industries.
