Stakeholders raise queries on Kenya's public expenditure

The Country’s public debt and the cost of servicing it are coming under fresh scrutiny, with the Institute of Economic Affairs putting the country’s public debt at about 13.2 trillion shillings. Addressing a Kenya Editors Guild forum in Nairobi, IEA Chief Executive Kwame Owino says 69 per cent of ordinary government revenue goes toward debt servicing. Stakeholders at the meeting also raised concerns that counties are grappling with billions of shillings in pending bills, rising wage bills and questions over revenue collection.
