Russia wants Ukraine to follow the peace plan and have a friendlier government in Ukraine.

there is a chain of relationships involving Witkoff → Blackstone → Schwarzman → RDIF/Dmitriev → Putin. This is why witkoff is involved.
Regardless of whether the negotiations went well or not, only an idiot would not know that peace between Russia and Ukraine will only happen when Putin feels that he is loosing the war. So the only way to peace, in the short term, is to support Ukraine to create the irrefutable image of winning. BS-ing your way to a peace deal will not happen. <br><br>Otherwise Russia will be pounding Ukraine, killing ~25 civilians daily, for the next 10 years until Russia collapses. During the London blitz more than 130 civilians were killed every day by the Nazis. Yet it was entirely counterproductive<br><br>Ukrainians will never surrender to Russia they’ll simply adopt the new bombing as the new normal and will only increase the reach and ferocity of their response.
