“Women kiss men, men kiss women”: Kazakhstan’s #President sets harsh #boundaries

A presidential appeal about traditional greetings has sparked an unexpected viral trend in Kazakhstan. Social media users are responding with memes and ironic videos showing the “proper” way to greet one another.

The trend follows President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s call to avoid hugging and kissing when meeting. He argued that such greetings are particularly inappropriate among military personnel.
Tokayev said generals should instead greet each other with a firm handshake. His comments have fueled a wider online debate about personal freedom, social norms and tradition.
