The only way to avoid further extremism in Germany, is for the middle to recognise and respect the issues that makes Germans vote for the AfD, rather than demonize them and ignore them. <br>That&#39;s is the certain way to encourage the extremists and get worse voting results each time. Danish Social Democrats woke up after a similar situation in Denmark 20 years ago and began to Listen to the voters and that took the wind out of the equivalent Danish AfD, Dansk Folke Parti.

Sachsen Anhalt is 2.5% of total population, its influence is so small there is NO impact on Germany (other than symbolic) and now AfD have to prove their promises and I predict next election they may be out already. Thank or blame CDU for not listening and making this all happen.

Saxony-Anhalt is a rural area with a small population in relation to the whole country. So, don&#39;t panic, but do pay attention, or you&#39;ll end up with a government as unhinged as the US under Trump. Hopefully the US midterm elections will put the brakes on some of Trump&#39;s excesses by restoring balance in the house and senate.

A question from an American who follows DW News almost daily: who writes the leads? I ask because I genuinely think your reporting is excellent, but lately I’ve noticed the lead sometimes seems more dramatic or loaded than the reporting that follows. In this case Saxony-Anhalt is introduced as older, less diverse and one of the least representative parts of Germany. But then your own excellent discussion explores high turnout, years of grassroots campaigning, economic anxiety, infrastructure, pensions and concerns that extend beyond eastern Germany. <br>The same thing happened with the “shock waves” coverage. Your own reporters later acknowledged that AfD’s strong showing was widely expected and that the real surprise was how badly the CDU performed. Sometimes it feels as though the excellent reporting that follows ends up answering—or even undermining—the premise of the lead. Is the lead written by the same journalists who do the reporting? Genuinely curious, because I think DW is at its best when it lets that deeper reporting speak for itself.

Maybe Germany should divide again. The East can leave the EU, and become a Balkan state filled to the brim with corruption.
