As an Environmental Engineer I hate to disagree. The day of the attack I was yelling at the TV to get respirators on those rescue workers and clear everyone off Manhattan leaving only those in the least impacted area. I have no proof by I am sure the people in charge knew the level of asbestos would be very high as well as plastics, pulverized glass, jet fuel and more. In a time of extreme crisis people went to work and said the hell with PPE’s. I get that, but as the days wore on they should have been in protective suits and respirators. It can take up to 30 years for Mesothelioma to develope from contact with asbestos. We have not seen the end to this illness.

I just don't get that comment, as a British electrician I was saying whilst watching it happen the death toll would be far worse over time because that much asbestos, and silica dust wouldn't just disappear without killing thousands. Anyone who's ever worked in the building trade knew this. I don't know what H&S training went on in the US but we've had to have annual training on this for the most of the past 40yrs in Britain.
