In today’s episode of Decode With Sudhir Chaudhary, we analyse the dangerous expansion of the Middle East war after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian cities and energy facilities, the brutal killing of a Manipuri music teacher in Delhi after a dispute over loud noise outside a dhaba, the growing concerns over unsafe buildings and student accommodation in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Dhurandhar’ welcome and development push in Vadodara, and the latest debate over restrictions on the hijab in schools in Austria.
The episode begins with the escalating Saudi-Houthi conflict. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group has carried out attacks on southern Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh reporting that dozens of people were injured and energy facilities were disrupted. The Houthis claimed that they targeted Saudi Aramco energy sites in southern areas as fighting between the Houthis and pro-Saudi forces in Yemen intensifies. Saudi Arabia has promised a firm retaliation. We decode how the latest attacks could expand the Middle East war, the role of Iran-backed Houthis, the threat to Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure and what this escalation means for regional security and global energy supplies.
The programme then examines the shocking murder of Chongtham Vikram Singh, a 55-year-old Manipuri music teacher and musician, in Delhi’s Kilokari Village near Ashram. According to reports, Singh went downstairs after loud noise from a dhaba outside his home became unbearable and asked the workers to reduce the noise. An argument reportedly followed, after which he was allegedly beaten by a group of dhaba workers and died. A well-known musician from Manipur who ran a music school in Delhi, Singh was the son of renowned classical vocalist Chongtham Ongbi Kamala Devi. We decode the growing culture of violence over everyday disputes and ask why an objection to loud noise can turn into a deadly confrontation.
The episode also looks at the building safety crisis in Delhi following the Satya Niketan building collapse and the subsequent MCD crackdown. Questions are being raised over unsafe construction, dangerous buildings, student accommodation and the growing PG ecosystem in Delhi. With reports of inspections across millions of buildings and concerns over the availability of DU hostels, we decode Delhi’s potentially dangerous PG and student housing system and the risks faced by young people living in unsafe buildings.
The programme then turns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Vadodara, where he received a ‘Dhurandhar’ style welcome as the popular ‘Aari Aari’ song played during his arrival. PM Modi inaugurated and flagged off several major development projects, including railway and highway projects, while laying foundation stones for projects worth more than Rs 35,000 crore. He also spoke to Gen-Z and highlighted India’s infrastructure transformation, including the progress of the Dedicated Freight Corridor. We decode the political messaging behind the ‘Dhurandhar’ welcome and PM Modi’s message to India’s youth.
Finally, we examine the news from Austria’s reported restrictions on hijab in schools and the wider European debate over religious symbols, education and integration. We decode why Austria is taking such measures and what the debate tells us about the changing approach towards religious dress in European schools.
