Australia proposes letting social media users opt out of algorithm-based content

Australia is moving to give social media users more control over what they see on their screens. The government is seeking to pass new laws requiring platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to let users opt out of personalised content recommended by algorithms. Users could be able to choose to see posts only from friends and creators they follow. The legislation would also impose a "digital duty of care" to better protect those under 18 from online harms. Companies that fail to comply could face fines of up to US$79 million. Natashya Gutierrez reports from Sydney.
