There is no trade with Israel that doesn't support illegal activity. If they can take tax revenue from it, then it supports illegal activity.

That’s just fine, after all we don’t need special information regarding imminent attacks on the UK and of course it’s always a good idea to unsettle Jewish people who have been living peacefully in England since 1656,and I’m pretty sure Mr Millibrain has Jewish roots, and I’ll just bet POTUS will be sanctioning us soon so all in all well done!

I like Milliband...he's an intelligent man and that was a thoughtful, nuanced, intelligent speech. I just wonder whether it might have been better waiting for the outcome of the Israeli general election, because I can see the Far Right in Israel distorting and weaponising the speech as an attack on Israel and Jews generally.

According to Bloomberg, British diplomats have been privately telling the Trump administration that the trade sanctions Ed Miliband is preparing to impose on Israel will be little more than symbolic. Behind the scenes, they are reportedly indicating that relations and commercial ties between Britain and Israel are expected to continue much as before. The talk from Burnham and Miliband of a “fundamental reset” in the UK’s relationship with Israel is, they suggest, primarily intended for a domestic audience.

There is a profound irony in Britain lecturing Israel today.

Britain helped shape the circumstances that led to Israel’s creation: the Balfour Declaration supported a Jewish national home, Britain governed Palestine under the Mandate, and Britain was deeply involved in the events surrounding Israel’s establishment in 1948.

Yet today Britain increasingly condemns Israel while appearing to overlook the decades of terrorism, conflict and rejection of Israel’s existence that have shaped its security concerns.

Israel has an ancient Jewish connection to the land and, after centuries of persecution culminating in the Holocaust, established a sovereign state in its historic homeland. Its right to exist should not be treated as negotiable.

Meanwhile, Britain has serious questions of its own to answer: uncontrolled or poorly controlled borders, illegal immigration, failures to remove people with no right to remain, foreign extremists exploiting Britain’s freedoms, failures to prevent radicalisation, and the protection of communities from terrorism and grooming. Yet Britain still presents itself as though it occupies the moral high ground from which it can lecture Israel about national security.

Britain helped shape this history. Before telling Israel how to protect its people, perhaps Britain should first demonstrate that it is capable of protecting its own.
