ANC defends its decision to challenge IEC in court

The ANC has defended its decision to challenge the Electoral Commission in court, insisting the move is not an attack on the IEC but a disagreement over the interpretation of electoral law.
The party has approached the Electoral Court after some of its candidate nominations were excluded for missing the 28 August submission deadline.

The ANC argues that technical glitches on the IEC's online system prevented certain nominations from being filed successfully and contends that the law should treat electronically submitted nominations the same as those delivered by hand.

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said the party is seeking legal clarity on what constitutes a valid submission as it fights to have the affected candidate lists reinstated ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections
