A pair of thieves who stole four Renoir paintings from a French museum left two in the garden as they fled, the local mayor said. Authorities initially thought only one of the paintings had been abandoned.

According to French media, the four stolen paintings were: Portrait of Madame Pichon (1895); Coco Lisant (1905); Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano (1910), and Jeune fille au puits (1886).

Earlier, the mayor's office said the estimated value of the stolen art was €9m (£7.7m).
