I got pissed! <br><br>Looked the part up on ALL the major part distributors, they were all close on the price. Looked it up on Ebay and Amazon.......20% of the cost!! Scroll by if you want to... all the advertising these places do, all the sponsorships for NASCAR, NHRA, TV ads, radio, magazines and especially ONLINE ADS, and so on is hitting YOU, in the checkbook! Now, compound parts, with because we have commercial property, (increase in Taxes), a business phone, (making money on it so the phone company charges more), business license, Worker&#39;s insurance, Liability insurance in case of disagreement or accident, this a required as part of doing business This is all part of auto repair<br><br>Except for the OUTRAGEOUS cost of parts! Same brand, same part number, different supplier! Are shops that take advantage, ABSOLUTELY! As somebody who has been buying cars and trucks since the 70’s, today’s vehicles are not that much more complicated to repair than vehicles over 30 years ago. For example, open the hood of a 88 Ford Bronco, see what awaits you, open the hood of any 70’s vehicle and gaze upon the maze of vacuum lines and plastic pieces, carbs that were balky, fuel injection has been a complete blessing for the industry, yet back then people were complaining that they would only work on old 60’s vehicles, with practice comes knowledge, my current 17 Suburban is only a little more complex than the 04 Suburban it replaced and it is a far better vehicle.

The actual problem is the government makes good parts that would last illegal. You put it in you&#39;re no longer legal on the road. In europe for example you have no choice but to switch to another car if you discover a part will break no matter how often you&#39;d change it. Because you&#39;re only allowed to put the same part back. Engines for example. You can&#39;t put a different engine inside. Good parts are illegal that&#39;s why nobody can repair anything. In the future I already look for an alternative to a car. For example a buggy. Because it became almost impossible to own a car in europe. They break but aftermarket parts are illegal. You can approve it if you have a lot of money. But for that money you could buy a ferrari or porsche. For example the PSA engines with wet belts. People can&#39;t repair them, because nobody would even try put this back into the car. All of them break long before 100k km. This is only one example of many why people are forced to find another car.

1, all dealerships will over sell and over charge you for everything. 2, all insurance for auto/home repairs are a scam they always deny. 3, doing your own A/C at home is very easy to screw it up those cans with the gauge is not very accurate be careful and only add a little at a time. over filling and under filling cause problem and can damage the system. The only thing that will fix this is regulations that supercede the fiduciary duty laws. Mandate a lifetime warranty on the body and powertrain like they do on the catalytic converter. Mandate dipsticks for engine oil and automatic transmission fluid. Mandate sealed beam LED headlights and cap the price at 5 dollars each. Mandate steel timing gears and pushrod valve trains.

Part costs are bad enough, but labor costs are outrageous. Not to mention how many dealers and repair shops are unethical at best and criminal at worst. I wouldn’t buy a used car these days unless it has immaculate records/Carfax, because many people can’t afford ridiculous maintenance/repair costs.

Boomer here. I do all my repairs myself. I drive a 2001 Tacoma with the immortal 3.4l V6 engine. Waiting on a new starter to arrive now. It&#39;s a b*tch to get a starter out and a new one in due to lack of space, but by golly, I&#39;m going to get it done. <br><br>It&#39;s an older truck obviously so things wear out and need fixing. This summer I did new rear shocks ($60), new springs ($300), fixed a cracked U-joint ($30), and now the new starter ($80). I&#39;m paying less for all this than some people are paying for a simple oil change at the dealership.<br><br>It pays to do it yourself and you all can do it. Watch it being done on YouTube and get yourself a good set of wrenches and a can of PB Blaster to spray the rusted up bolts and nuts. You&#39;ll be fine. Box of band-aids too since you will bust a knuckle.

Inflation is making almost everything cost more and more as time goes by. It will only get more expensive, so it&#39;s best to start learning how to do basic maintenance on your car(and other things) yourself.<br><br>To be fair, shops have to charge a lot for repairs because of the overhead.(taxes, permits, fees, wages, insurance, ongoing software updates, periodical specialty tools, utilities, rent/lease, etc.)<br><br>And most are equipped to do the complex jobs a DIY can&#39;t do easily. But it will cost some serious money.<br>So repair shops do have their place but if you want to save money on simple repairs, you must learn and do it yourself.<br><br>Youtube has multitudes of videos on how to do repairs on specific vehicle makes and models.<br>(A1 Auto, TRQ, The Car Care Nut, and other repair shops, etc)<br><br>I suggest watching at least 3+ videos on the same repair so you can get a good idea of how it will go and what the gotchas are plus the tips the mechanics give.<br>If you can get a service manual, that would be even better, as they contain great detail on your vehicles workings.<br><br>And if you know a mechanic that does good work on the side and is reasonable on price, by all means give them the business.

Went for an oil change after 10 months and after the Iran war started. They rotate tires among other things in their deal and found my rear brake pads were down to 1 millimeter and the rotors were delaminating. They estimated $800 to replace the rear pads and rotors on both wheels including the oil change, they charged me $50 less. I could never do car repair myself, but I can fill up the windshield wiper fluid tank with my favorite Rain-X product; so I told them not to replace that, but they left the tank empty so I had to refill it myself days later after I got the error message on the dash. Reddit says cruise control is wearing down rear brakes twice as fast as front brakes.<br><br>I&#39;ve seen 2 car mechanics on threads in the last day saying they are not getting any more oil shipped in to their garages.

I&#39;ve watched videos, my vehicle is a easy 15 minute fix if just that belt. $25 part. I&#39;m just scared that i&#39;ll make it worse and it&#39;s our only working car. My husband would be so angry with me.<br><br>He says it&#39;s fine. I know it&#39;s not. So i rarely drive it. My son runs me around when he visits. I think i&#39;ll buy the belt though. Just incase.<br><br>I prep so good on stuff, just hard to come up with hundreds. Had to get a refurbaged battery for the one needing the fuel pump for $40. My neighbor, a little old lady was a smartest woman I ever met. She was the very last person to work for Kaiser still when they shut down, she was a metal Large attack lady and your name it. She did my taxes for years, but she was centered 70 she took her Honda Accord to get a oil change at the dealership. It had 26,000 miles on it, but it was 10 years old they told her she needed new brakes, new tires, a new battery and when she asked why they said you don’t drive it enough so she called our local mechanic on speakerphone and he quoted her $200.

So you know. 2022 vehicles and newer use the R1234yf refrigerant and it seems to love eating the evaporator core. Whole dash has to come out.

I got a used car from my trusted independent mechanic seven years ago. When it started having some transmission problems that he couldn&#39;t identify and didn&#39;t feel competent to address two years ago, the &#39;transmission specialists&#39; wanted 35 % more to fix it than I paid for the car. We&#39;ve been steadily using it, despite it not being perfect. We can&#39;t afford to buy another, and we can&#39;t afford the ridiculous price to POSSIBLY fix it.

Rent a auto repair bay sometime $50 per hour and do basic repairs/maintenance yourself oil changes, change spark plugs, rotate tires, brake inspection, brake pads among other simple things, you’ll be surprised what you can do yourself plus you’ll know how it was done (because you did it)
