I wish stuff was that simple. Truth is, since Covid, most shops offer a minimum base pay. But it still doesn’t help. Guys would rather show up, make the minimum and do as little possible. Instead of working hard to make more money, they just adjust their lives to survive on the minimum and then never make an effort again. Very, very few people in the area are willing to do all they can every day.

Book time is usually 2-10× the length a job actually takes. He never stated what the base hourly rate was, could be waitress rates. They get paid hourly and a "bonus rate". This system would be best if you rename the bonus rate to "tips" and now your guys pay no income tax on that... now THAT would smart.

in my early 20s i was a bookkeeper at a small auto shop and i remember one day i saw how much we did in sales and i told one of the guys as like a "woah check this out" kind of thing. the owner overheard and gave me a talking to afterward, saying i shouldnt tell them how much money the shop makes because then they'll start asking for raises.
Don't hire a dumb, slow, stupid, expert con artist mechanic. Hire an honest, skilled, knowledgeable professional friend and pay appropriately the fair fee. NO RIP OFF ARTISTS PLEASE 😉

Where you located and are you hiring bc im a flat rate tech for 20 years and this small town is a hard place for a tech...wish more would shops did this or something like it like if I make 40 hours and was here for 40 hours then leave the hourly pay alone and give the the flat rate hours but if I make 20 then give the the 20 hourly pay even if its like 15 an hour...I make 30 and I have to have at least 90% of the hours im there to get the 30 otherwise im 28...😂😂😂 what a deal

I work for Sears for 32 years and that is the way we used to get paid it was called a modified flat rate. We would get paid hourly plus a percentage of everything we did it was really good money! It was perfect because we made more money in the company made a lot more money it was a win win

To me I feel like instead of them switching completely if they find that an employee is milking their hours they should then switch that employee to flat rate until they go back to fixing stuff at a timely manner. <br><br>I don't think that everybody should have to suffer because of the fact that there's that one dude that wants to milk the fuck out of his clock. <br><br>I know a dude that my dad trusted completely to fix stuff and I'm pretty sure he did flat rate stuff but one of the things that I began to notice is because of the fact that he's getting older he started up charging the hell out of shit so I had to start going somewhere else. The thing with flat rate is is you can up the price on how much you want to charge to have somebody do something and you can screw people over a hell of a lot easier than you can using a clock.

This guy needs to franchise out there's a place where I live in Bonney Lake good money out here I didn't know that when I moved out here I never would have moved here wrong ZIP code for me but I'm making a living it's tight but he could do that out here there's two shops out here that are s*** and there's two shots out here that are good the good ones are insane to get into the s*** shops no problem the Ford dealer no problem but they charge $125 an hour so I only get my oil changes done there on my 04 Lincoln Town Car

That’s how all jobs should be if we are making efficient work pay better and when there is no work pay good. (From here on out I’m just ranting) It’s always a look of shock when I give my two weeks bc I’ve hit the pay top at a small company. If you want to keep good employees for years pay them better. The proof is in the pudding. If you want people to work hard you better pull out that cash when they do bc they are carrying your dreams as a business owner. So far in my life every where I’ve worked has had high turnover rates. Ive only seen one person actually retire after 20 years at a large company. I don’t know I just think the pay is lacking when I have to spend more than an hour of my wages to go to a normal restaurant. Like I get that it’s a privilege to go out and eat and I should cook at home. But when I want to go on a date with my partner I have to spend at minimum 100 dollars on after food at an ever day restaurant like I just don’t get how employers can imagine that 15.16 an hour is actually keeping your employees feed. It like we’re stuck in limbo with pay.

What about selling a customer a 12 hour job and being done 6 hours later? Is that an issue? I didn’t like seeing 2 hours labor on an invoice and they called me 20 mins after I approved the work…

I worked at a shop that paid hourly plus a commission, commission was as low 39 percent of labor generated but had to produce enough generated labor to pay yourself before commission kicked in and then vacation pay was figured out at 6 week average

If it takes you 16 hours to do a job that pays 8 hours book time and you didn't run into a bunch of problems, you're a shitty mechanic and should find another line of work.

We are flat rate with an 85 hr guarantee. Your system sounds great as well because it sounds like if you are high one day and low the next your good day doesn't subsidize your bad day you just get more on your good days.
A blended system is the only way that it should be done because trusting a shop to have you completely occupied for the entire day is a lot of pressure. If servers can get wages plus tips, why can't mechanics?

Hourly with incentive is the only way to go i work at a ford dealer and thats how we get paid any hours flagged over 40 we get pay increase every 1.5 after 40 until it caps at 60 hours so you get a 5 to 10 buck increases in lay if you get more work donw

I know someone who worked in a body shop for nearly 40 years. Used to be hourly. Then flat rate. He was a master of his craft. But he said with the new tech and million clips on bumpers etc, there was no way to make any real money anymore even when you work your ass off and know what you’re doing. Sad stuff. Insurance companies are to blame

I remember my first job at a dealership. A young lube tech and I had no idea what warranty pay was. I marked a leaking timing cover. Turns out seeping and leaking are different. So the tech that got it was mad because it was Toyota avalon. Customer pay is like 10+hours but warranty only paid like 6. He saw I was new and kindly explained the difference. "Next time ask one of us to look at it." As a customer I want my car fixed but as a tech I want to get paid fairly.

Correction, flat rate, commission, and then hourly. I did all three but now Im hrly/contract. Dont work at a shop that does limited repairs, invest in tools, invest in yourself, jump on different training seminars! If you are good at propperly diagnosing and not screwing up repairs you will make money! I got good from fixing comebacks from other techs when I started out, then I ran circles around them and had complaints about taking work.😂 It took a few years but I started killing it working flat rate and commission. Now Im hourly but work for a municipal fleet.

We implemented a similar system for our Massage Therapy practice. We paid all the therapists a base hourly rate for the time they were clocked in and would give them a commission on top for every service they performed. We were the best paying Massage Therapy business in the area and attracted a lot of the best therapists. We ended up selling that business for a quarter million and moving away. Now my wife and I just work for ourselves again and we make a little side cash renting out rooms in our office to other practitioners.
