Anak Krakatau currently too small to trigger tsunami like in 2018: Expert

Jakarta’s main airport and four other travel hubs reopened on Tuesday (Sep 8) after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted nearly 3,000 flights and affected hundreds of thousands of travellers. Indonesian authorities have warned that the probability of further eruptions remains high. Anak Krakatau is currently too small to trigger a tsunami through a collapse similar to the one in 2018, says Benoit Taisne, associate professor at Nanyang Technological University’s Asian School of the Environment and director of the Centre for Geohazard Observations. He tells CNA’s Asia First that another eruption could occur within days or weeks, while volcanic ash remains a risk to aviation.
