[Diplomat's Archives: Hidden Stories] Ep.60 In Search of 140 Years of Korea-France Friendship

In September 2026, as Korea and France mark the 140th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, President Lee Jae Myung and French President Emmanuel Macron are co-chairing the Lumière Summit, further strengthening exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
Korea and France established official diplomatic relations in 1886 with the signing of the Korea-France Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation. But recently, it has come to light that the first contact between Korea and France dates back much further—to 1851, when the French whaling ship Narwal was shipwrecked off the coast of Joseon.
As Korea and France celebrate the 140th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, we take our viewers on a journey through the history of friendship between the two countries.


한국과 프랑스가 수교 140주년을 맞은 2026년 9월, 이재명 대통령과 에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령은 뤼미에르 정상회의를 공동 주재하며 어느 때보다 양국 간 교류와 협력을 강화하고 있다. 한국과 프랑스는 1886년 조불수호통상조약을 체결하면서 공식적인 외교 관계를 맺었다. 그런데 최근, 한불 간 최초의 접촉이 그보다 훨씬 오래 전인 1851년 프랑스 고래잡이 배 나르발호가 조선에 표류하면서 시작됐다는 사실이 밝혀져 관심을 모으고 있다.
