Why do Trump & Putin both cheer German far-right’s victory? | News in Depth

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has achieved a historic breakthrough in Saxony-Anhalt, putting the far right on the verge of governing a German state for the first time since World War II. What is more, Eurosceptic parties are not only gaining support across the continent but also receive encouragement from both Washington and Moscow.

“European integration was strongly endorsed by the Americans in the past. It would have never come about without the American support. And former American presidents seem to understand that, whether they were left-wing or right-wing. The current American administration is of a very different view,” said Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World’s Europe Editor, pointing out that while it breaks with previous policy, the endorsement of AfD is consistent with Trump’s stance on the European integration project. “I cannot read into the mind of Donald Trump why he’s so anti-European and endorsing of Euroskeptic formations. I find it really irrational.”

“Essentially, both the Trump administration and the Russians view European integration with hostility. They want to break up the European Union. For the Russians, it's actually kind of understandable,” Zaborowski said, explaining that a weak EU “which doesn’t have a common foreign, security, and defense policy is the European Union which the Russians are dreaming about, because that means that it’s easier for them to dominate Europe,” adding that a disunited Europe would also mean less support for Ukraine and therefore facilitate Russian victory in the war.
