AfD wins key regional election in rural German state | Andrzej Byrt

Germany's anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party is aiming to become the first far-right party to take power at a state level since World War II as voters in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt head to the polls Sunday. However, a failure to secure an absolute majority may see the politically isolated party struggle to form a government.

Exit polls suggest the far-right party has narrowly missed securing an absolute majority in the state parliament in Magdeburg. The AfD has never participated in a ruling coalition in Germany’s 16 states nor its federal government, as all other mainstream parties refuse to work with it, a policy infamously known as the “firewall.”

Our guest, Former Polish Ambassador to Germany and France Andrzej Byrt, emphasized that "It's quite a big change. At least now, in preliminary figures. We'll know exactly in the final results tomorrow morning. And then on this basis, we can just formulate certain forecasts of who will then be reigning in the land of Saxony-Anhalt."
