CPUT gives green light for class resumption after weeks of protests: Lauren Kansley

After weeks of protests and disruption, students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology are preparing to return to class.

CPUT suspended its academic programme following protests over financial and other student grievances, while students were also ordered to evacuate residences as the situation became increasingly tense.

The university's Senate has resolved that students will return on 14 September, with the academic year extended to recover lost teaching time.

But reopening the campuses is only part of the challenge.

CPUT must also deal with the grievances that triggered the protests, rebuild trust with students and ensure that the return to campus is safe.
