'Skywalking' with drones: How engineers maintain China's largest 750 kV live-line #coolchina

China's largest 750-kilovolt (kV) ultra-high-voltage power transmission loop around the Tarim Basin – home to the country's largest desert, the Taklimakan Desert, in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region – completed its first live-line working on April 29.

According to reports, during a routine inspection of the transmission lines, maintenance personnel identified a potential defect that could cause equipment failure. Subsequently, using a combination of drones and the "flying man" – a portable electric lifting device developed for high-altitude work and rescue – they reached the worksite and eliminated the defect within just one hour, without power interruption.
