Cannabis smell halts Sabalenka's US Open win as Alcaraz advances

World number one Aryna Sabalenka briefly halted her third-round US Open match after saying she smelled cannabis on the court. While cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older in New York, smoking is not permitted at Flushing Meadows. Despite the disruption, Sabalenka extended her winning streak in New York to 16 straight matches, as she chases a hat-trick of titles that would make her the first woman to do so since Serena Williams 12 years ago.

Defending champion Alcaraz beat Wu Yibing in straight sets to reach the fourth round, in his first tournament in four months after recovering from injury. He next faces home favourite Tommy Paul as he aims to become the youngest man to win eight Grand Slam titles.
