There’s no problem in smart countries in Asia, Africa and South America. Cuz people there studied Geography fundamentally. They knew that it’s just the size on the map.
But the UN knew that there were lots of dumb people in North America who even didn’t know “Which continent is their own country in?” Those dumb people always thought that Greenland is larger than Africa!

This whole exercise is silly. There is an abundance of map projections to choose from, and that has been the case for centuries. If one projection doesn't suit your use, then pick another. Involving the UN doesn't make sense.

Preservation of approximate shape seems slightly useful, but at the sacrifice of direction?

Do we even really need standard projections now that computers are able to rapidly generate maps with relative size reflecting any of a number of metrics? Especially with updates being digital current population would be more useful than area, especially as areas vary widely in their value.
