President of the Transatlantic Leadership Network Daniel Hamilton says there’s little reason to expect a breakthrough from Kushner and Witkoff’s trip to Kyiv, although hearing directly from Ukrainian leaders is a step in the right direction. He argues that Putin isn’t showing weakness or uncertainty – instead, Russia is doubling down by attacking Ukraine while expanding sabotage operations across Europe to undermine public support for Kyiv.
Hamilton believes Moscow is increasingly waging a war for European public opinion, trying to make people question their governments’ support for Ukraine and increase concerns about personal safety. He also dismisses Donald Trump’s suggestion that Europe could be asked to reimburse the U.S. for weapons previously sent to Ukraine, calling it another social-media message with little realistic prospect of happening.
On the battlefield, Hamilton says, Ukraine should keep striking Russian military, energy, and supply-chain targets as bringing the costs of the war home to ordinary Russians can put the Kremlin on the defensive.
