Writing your ERAS residency personal statement can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re trying to sound authentic and stand out.
The official ERAS website notes that AI can help you brainstorm and edit…but your personal statement still needs to sound like you.
In this video, I share a clear, program-director-friendly 4-part framework for a strong residency personal statement:
1. Name the specialty you’re applying to—and why it genuinely fits you
2. Share one real story (a patient moment or experience that shaped you)
3. Highlight what you truly enjoy about the field
4. Close with what you hope to bring as a resident (your values + direction)
Quick personal statement tip: Skip the “novel-style” dramatic opening quotes. When reviewers are reading hundreds of applications, clarity, reflection, and specificity win.
If you’re a med student applying this cycle (or you know someone who is), I hope this helps—feel free to share it.
