In Easter Express, Benjamin Lee is joined by Peter Zalmayev, Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative, who explains why Aleksandr Dugin is often called “Putin’s philosopher” and why that label can be misleading. Putin has borrowed ideas from Dugin, or Ivan Ilyin and the concept of the “Russian World,” but he has also adapted them to fit his political goals and the realities on the ground. And as the war enters its fifth year, Russia’s ambitions are increasingly colliding with battlefield losses, growing Chinese influence in Eurasia, and a wider confrontation with Europe that includes propaganda and hybrid attacks.
