Russia wants Donbas for economic growth and boasting of regaining Soviet empire. Ukraine needs Donbas as defensive buffer against future invasions of aggression.

The Donbass was "gifted" to Ukraine by Lenin and Stalin so that the new republic of Ukraine that they were creating would have some industry. Everyone there was russian. Stalin then gifted Ukraine Transcarpathia and western Ukraine after the end of WWII and Khrushchev gifted Crimea in 1954 after losing it in a game of cards while drunk (Kissinger's interpretation). So that's the history of Ukraine in a nutshell.

The people don’t understand the interest of Ukraine and Russia, my opinion let Ukraine and Russia to settle their differences. This is a way to end war.

Gosh, the stupidity of DW's rethorical-question headlines has reached cosmic scale!. Have you not heard Putin say, repeatedly, for 5 years, that the Donbass is the key to this war?

Experts believe the Donbas is where most of the losses of the war are happening. Recent reports show Russian casualties outstrip its recruitment by 6,000 troops every month. With elections around the corner is Russia, there are worries of a renewed mobilization. For Ukraine too, the threat is higher than ever – as Russia ramps up its bombing campaign, Ukraine is running out of interceptors, all with another winter of the war around the corner.
