Svalbard is Norwegian. It is just that Norway lost a lot of territories during the 500 years we were reigned by Denmark and Sweden. After our independence from 1905, we negotiated throught the first world war treaties and had to sign off on a sort of deal where we got sovereignity but had to a sort of international equality for settlers there. We also wanted Greenland back, but had to give that up. During the &quot;unions&quot; we lost big partts of Sweden, Parts of Scotland, Iceland, Faroe Islands etc. Svalbard will never be given up, the only way forward is for other nations to respect our sovereignity. Breaches of that would invite forceful full sovereignity as the treaty says nothing about military presence. We just adheared to that because of Russia. We have lost so much land in the past, this and Jan Mayen will never be given up and I am proud of Norway upholding international law and letting the Russians know we are not afraid of the bullying warmongers.

Do note that Canada is holding a Russian cargo aircraft for some time now, refusing to return it. <br>So the problem/ situation is not the arctic, it is a global freeze of Russian assets.

The patience of the Russians will be exhausted at some point and they would go absolute beast on Europe. The obvious provocations are just insane. When the missiles start flying, it will not stop. <br><br>A powerful missile strike on Norway&#39;s energy infrastructure will completely cripple that country. If a country is admitted into NATO, it should be wrong for them to have their own foreign policies or personal agenda. If Russia nukes Norway, can we think any of the NATO members will risk their own safety and will come to the rescue of Norway? I don&#39;t think so. If they try to Nuke Moscow, Russian missiles can nuke Washington, Berlin and London. At the most NATO will hold a high level meeting and will issue a strong condemnation statement against Russia.This is especially true because Iranian war proved that THAD and Patriot missiles are not so effective against maneuvering ballistic missiles. So, stop this foolish postering, originating from ego, and bring a negotiated settlement to this never ending war ASAP. Please show some common sense to think that one cannot win a war against a country with highest number of Nukes in this world. So both the parties needs to be pragmatic and reach a negotiated settlement for the common good of the world, rather than pouring fuel into fire, by foolish postering.

For North Americans, if you want to find Svalbard, first find Greenland on a map. Then draw your eye northeast to Iceland, then continue northeast again and you&#39;ll find Svalbard. Svalbard is Norwegian, has a small population who worked primarily in the coal mining industry which is now permanently closed as of 2025. However, Russia has a settlement mining coal there as well.

Russia is not challenging the Norway sovereignty over the Island. As this expert has said there is a treaty between the two countries where Russia has a mining company operating. There is nothing illegal in this arrangement. Actually the two communities the Norwegian and the Russian get along very well. This is a clear provocation by the Norwegian government.

This is about business and the law. The company that owns the ship went to the UN and won the case. The ship is theirs. The company that litigated the case is American. It&#39;s maritime law. Norway found the ship within their waters. It confiscated the ship. It has the right to do it. Nothing specifically against Russia.

Norway operates almost 100 offshore oil and gas fields connected by roughly 6000 miles of underwater pipelines. Being that vulnerable, it boggles the mind the Norwegians would think that seizing a Russian ship in the current environment would be a good idea.

Russia is headed in a worse direction, I wouldn&#39;t be surprised if they expand the war soon. I&#39;m US/Swiss so I&#39;m hoping the US will be helpful but worried that until Trump is gone, it won&#39;t be. In the long run, I&#39;m more hopeful the US will fill its role.
