Ukraine’s top diplomat Andrii Sybiha said that Kyiv is hoping for increased momentum in peace talks soon, while Russia’s Putin has also signaled willingness to negotiate, with China being floated as a mediator alongside the U.S. But where is Europe in all this?
“I don’t think that there is a really clear answer. And that is a problem for Europe. There is an old adage here in Washington, D.C., which is the president saying: ‘When I want to call Europe, who do I call?’” said Philippe Dickinson, Deputy Director of the Transatlantic Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council, in an interview with TVP World. “And as long as those issues remain somewhat unresolved, there’s always going to be that question and that ambiguity.”
Dickinson said the current U.S. administration has tried to “sideline Europe” and appears to treat the whole European integration project with suspicion. But at the same time:
“President Trump has said so many times it’s incumbent on Europe to collectively make sure that it is part of those key discussions,” said Dickinson, “because there can be no discussion about broader European security without Europe sitting at the table and really leading those conversations.”
