The Competition Commission's Rural and Township Economy Research Report has found that systemic, geographic and regulatory barriers continue to hamper the growth of independent and informal enterprises.

The study notes that local businesses face constraints in sourcing, selling and regulatory compliance, while consumers often have to travel to access a wider range of goods and services.

The report was launched at the 20th Competition Law, Economics and Policy conference in Johannesburg.
