Europe can’t stand idly by on Middle Eastern conflict’s sidelines | Galip Dalay

Six months into the war between Iran and the U.S. and Israel, hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough appear as distant as ever. With the conflict increasingly disrupting global trade and energy routes through the Strait of Hormuz, can Europe afford to remain on the sidelines of efforts to end the crisis?

“Europe needs to get much more deeply involved in the resolution of this issue,” Galip Dalay, Senior Research Fellow at Chatham House and Co-Director of the Program on Global Orders at Oxford University, told TVP World on the sidelines of the Impact Leading Minds conference in Warsaw. “It’s a pity that Europe is almost absent in the diplomatic sphere to solve this crisis.”

Dalay points out that European diplomacy had a big role in drafting the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between Iran and the international community, calling it “a signature achievement of European diplomacy” and saying that it should now get involved in helping find new routes for trade and energy to “curtail the ability of Iran to weaponize its geography,” which Tehran did by blockading the Strait of Hormuz.

“This is also going to have a major impact on security in Europe,” Dalay said, concluding that “Europe needs to be part of the concerted effort to bring this war to an end.”
