The Modjadji royal lineage traces its ancestral origins back to the Monomotapa royal house in present-day Zimbabwe during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Spanning over 400 years of royal tradition, the Balobedu people migrated south in the early 19th century to settle in Limpopo's Molototsi Valley, establishing Ga-Modjadji.

The name "Modjadji" translates as "Ruler of the Day," establishing an ancestral chieftainship that governed a community of over 150 rural villages.
