Ultimately, the Bishkek summit showed that Russia still has significant diplomatic space beyond the West, with Putin using the gathering to reinforce ties with China and engage other major powers across Eurasia.

Xi and Putin reaffirmed what they described as an increasingly solid strategic partnership, presenting closer cooperation as part of a broader push towards a more multipolar world amid growing uncertainty in the international order. But the summit also exposed the limits of that alignment, as India’s Narendra Modi urged Putin to end the war in Ukraine, while Turkey’s Erdoğan continued to deepen ties with Moscow without giving up Ankara’s room to maneuver. So, what did Bishkek reveal about Russia’s relationships with China, Turkey, and the wider non-Western world – and how sustainable is this partnership as the war in Ukraine continues?
