Business in Nairobi’s Central Business District was brought to a near standstill as irate traders took to the streets protesting increased import taxes. Police were forced to lob teargas to disperse the traders who were determined to push through to parliament and Kenya Revenue Authority offices. KRA Customs Commissioner Dr Lilian Nyawanda, in a quick rejoinder, said the cost to clear a container increased from 2.5 million to 3.2 million shillings following negotiations with traders, insisting it was an adjustment and not a new tax.
