Starbucks promotion backlash: Coffee chain's campaign accused of trivialising South Korea's past

Police in South Korea are stepping up their probe into Shinsegae Group chairman Chung Yong-jin after a Starbucks Korea campaign triggered public outrage. The promotion called “Tank Day” was launched on May 18, the anniversary of the 1980 Gwangju pro-democracy uprising, when troops and tanks were sent in to crush demonstrations. Critics say the campaign was deeply insensitive, especially because the word “tank” evoked memories of that crackdown. Lim Yun Suk reports.
