Gauteng's latest crime stats: Dr Bandile Masuku weighs in

Crime in the country's biggest province, Gauteng, appears to be on a downward trajectory, despite increases in kidnappings and sexual offences. have increased by 1.6 % and 5,2% respectively. Serious crimes decreased by 5 066, a drop of 52% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the corresponding period last year. While the police's crime fighting operation, Operation Shanela, saw the total number of arrests for this quarter reach 36 122 of which 11 715 were undocumented immigrants.
