The Electoral Commission of South Africa has welcomed the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa confirming 4 November as the date for the 2026 local government elections.

The IEC says the election date provides clarity for all stakeholders to plan effectively.

As the Commission continues to engage South Africa's youth in electoral processes and encourage their participation in voting, questions arise about whether the chosen date aligns with key civic education initiatives in schools and tertiary institutions.
