Two alleged members of a guardrail theft syndicate are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
One of them is a suspected kingpin and leader of the operation. The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department says millions of rands worth of guardrails have been stripped from roads across the province, with the thefts believed to be contributing to fatal crashes.
The latest arrests have prompted the department to order a forensic investigation into guardrail tenders, while it considers bringing in the Hawks and the Special Investigating Unit to probe possible links between officials and the syndicate.
Senior reporter, Nonhlakanipho Magwaza, says the suspected kingpin was arrested last week following a joint operation between the department's special security team, and the SAPS Organised Crime Unit.
