2026 FIFA World Cup | Historic repeat for Bafana Bafana and Mexico

Mexico and South Africa will turn back the clock when they clash in the opening match of the FIFA world Cup 2026 in Mexico City this evening.
Exactly 16 years ago today, Bafana Bafana and Mexico also met in the opening match of the 2010 edition at a packed Soccer City in Johannesburg.
It was the first FIFA World Cup on Africa soil, and the match fittingly ended in a 1-all draw, with Siphiwe Tshabalala scoring a spectacular goal for the home side in the 55th minute.
