US moving to indict former Cuban leader Raúl Castro

U.S. media is reporting that the U.S. Justice Department is working to secure an indictment of Cuba's former President, Raul Castro, who is 94.

The development comes amid a months-long oil blockade that has brought the country's economy to its knees amid rolling blackouts and a growing humanitarian crisis as frustration bursts onto the streets.

The allegations being pursued against Castro centre on the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft flown by the anti-Castro exile group 'Brothers to the Rescue'.

Cuba asserted at the time that the group, formed by Cuban exiles, had repeatedly violated Cuban airspace and that the move was an act of national self-defense.

Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports that three Cuban Americans and a U.S. permanent resident were killed in the incident, and that an indictment charging Castro could happen in a matter of days.
