Citizens urged to not start veld fires

City Power is urging residents not to start veld fires, especially near electricity infrastructure, warning that this can cause widespread power outages and damage to the network.

The warning follows a wildfire near the Sebenza Substation, which disrupted electricity supplies to large parts of Johannesburg's eastern corridor, including Alexandra, Midrand and sections of the inner city.

Emergency services have been working to contain the blaze, while City Power teams await clearance to assess the damage and begin restoration.

The utility says veld fires continue to pose a serious threat to critical electricity infrastructure.
